Description

The npm package 'backup4-gasp' contains malicious code that compromises any computer on which it is installed or running. The compromise is severe enough that all secrets and keys stored on the affected system should be rotated immediately from a different, trusted machine. Removing the package alone does not guarantee removal of all malicious software introduced by it, as the attacker may have gained full control of the system.

Technical Analysis

The 'backup4-gasp' npm package is identified as containing malicious code that fully compromises affected computers. Installation or execution of this package grants an attacker potential full control over the system. Due to the severity of the compromise, all credentials and secrets stored on the system must be rotated from a secure environment. The package removal is necessary but insufficient to fully remediate the infection, as persistent malicious components may remain.

Potential Impact

Complete system compromise on any computer with the package installed or running. Potential exposure and theft of all stored secrets and keys. The attacker may maintain persistent access beyond removal of the package.

Mitigation Recommendations

Immediately remove the 'backup4-gasp' package from affected systems. Rotate all secrets and keys stored on the compromised computer from a separate, secure machine. Conduct a thorough investigation and remediation of the affected system to identify and remove any additional malicious software or backdoors. Because full control may have been given to an attacker, consider rebuilding the system from a known good backup or reinstalling the operating system.
