Published: 07/13/2026 (07/13/2026, 06:27:39 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: backupgenuine-updated

Description

The npm package 'backupgenuine-updated' contains malicious code that compromises any computer on which it is installed or running. The compromise is severe enough that all secrets and keys stored on the affected computer should be rotated immediately from a different, secure machine. Removal of the package alone does not guarantee elimination of all malicious software introduced by it, as the attacker may have gained full control of the system.

Technical Analysis

The 'backupgenuine-updated' package in the npm ecosystem is identified as malicious. Installation or execution of this package results in a full system compromise, potentially allowing an attacker to control the affected computer. Due to the nature of the compromise, sensitive information such as secrets and keys stored on the system are at risk and must be rotated from a secure environment. The package removal is insufficient to fully remediate the infection because the attacker may have deployed additional persistent malicious components.

Potential Impact

Complete compromise of any system running or having installed the 'backupgenuine-updated' package. All stored secrets and keys on the compromised system are exposed and must be considered compromised. The attacker may maintain persistent access beyond the presence of the package itself.

Mitigation Recommendations

Immediately remove the 'backupgenuine-updated' package from all affected systems. Rotate all secrets, keys, and credentials that were stored or used on the compromised machines from a separate, secure system. Conduct a thorough investigation and remediation of the affected systems, as removal of the package alone does not guarantee full eradication of malicious components.
