Description

The npm package 'nottuff29' contains malicious code that fully compromises any computer on which it is installed or running. This compromise includes potential unauthorized access to all secrets and keys stored on the affected system. Technical Analysis

The 'nottuff29' package in the npm ecosystem is identified as containing malicious code that results in a full compromise of the host computer. Installation or execution of this package grants an attacker complete control over the system, potentially exposing all stored secrets and keys. Due to the depth of compromise, removal of the package alone is insufficient to ensure system integrity. The advisory recommends immediate secret/key rotation from a separate, secure machine and removal of the package to mitigate ongoing risk.

Potential Impact

Any system with the 'nottuff29' package installed or running is considered fully compromised, meaning attackers may have complete control over the system and access to all stored secrets and keys. This can lead to unauthorized data access, credential theft, and further malicious activity. Removal of the package does not guarantee elimination of all malicious artifacts, increasing the risk of persistent compromise.

Mitigation Recommendations

Remove the 'nottuff29' package immediately from affected systems. Rotate all secrets and keys stored on the compromised system using a different, secure computer to prevent further unauthorized access. Due to the severity of the compromise, consider rebuilding or thoroughly cleaning the affected system to ensure removal of all malicious software. Patch status is not applicable as this is a malicious package rather than a vulnerability with a vendor patch.
