MAL-2026-10363: Malicious code in openai-apps (npm)

0
Critical
Published: 07/13/2026 (07/13/2026, 06:12:53 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: openai-apps

Description

The openai-apps npm package contains malicious code that fully compromises any computer on which it is installed or running. This compromise allows an attacker to gain full control over the affected system. Removal of the package does not guarantee elimination of all malicious software introduced. Immediate rotation of all secrets and keys stored on the compromised computer is strongly advised, using a different, secure machine.

Technical Analysis

The openai-apps package distributed via npm has been identified as containing malicious code that results in a full system compromise upon installation or execution. The malicious code grants attackers full control over the infected computer, potentially exposing all stored secrets and keys. Due to the depth of compromise, simply uninstalling the package may not remove all malicious artifacts or backdoors. The advisory recommends treating any system with this package as fully compromised and rotating all credentials from a separate, secure environment.

Potential Impact

Full compromise of any computer running or having installed the openai-apps npm package. All secrets and keys stored on the system are at risk and should be considered exposed. The attacker may maintain persistent access even after package removal, posing ongoing security risks.

Mitigation Recommendations

Remove the openai-apps package immediately from all affected systems. Rotate all secrets, keys, and credentials stored on the compromised machines from a different, secure computer. Because the system may remain compromised after package removal, consider rebuilding or thoroughly cleaning affected systems to ensure complete eradication of malicious code.
