Malicious code in @bellaxchuu/flowblue (npm)

Description

The npm package @bellaxchuu/flowblue version 1.5.7 is part of a large family of malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library. These forks inject code that silently subscribes the victim's authenticated WhatsApp account to attacker-controlled channels without user consent. The target channels are obfuscated or dynamically fetched, enabling attackers to change targets post-installation. The malicious code abuses the installer's WhatsApp session to increase subscribers for attacker channels but does not steal credentials, maintain persistence, or execute arbitrary remote code.

Technical Analysis

The @bellaxchuu/flowblue package (version 1.5.7) is one of over 100 near-identical malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library. These forks inject a covert subscription action into the WhatsApp socket layer, issuing an authenticated 'w:mex' FOLLOW query to attacker-chosen WhatsApp Channel/Newsletter JIDs using the victim's own authenticated session. The target JIDs are hidden via obfuscation methods such as base64 encoding, XOR, or runtime reconstruction, or fetched dynamically from attacker-controlled remote sources. This mechanism silently subscribes the victim's account to channels without their knowledge or consent. The malicious action leverages the victim's authenticated session for reach but does not exfiltrate credentials, establish persistence, or allow arbitrary code execution.

Potential Impact

The impact is limited to unauthorized subscription of the victim's WhatsApp account to attacker-controlled channels, potentially leading to unwanted content delivery or spam. There is no credential theft, persistence, or remote code execution involved. The victim's WhatsApp session is abused to increase subscriber counts for malicious channels without user awareness.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is provided. Users should avoid installing or using the affected package version 1.5.7 of @bellaxchuu/flowblue. Since this is a malicious package, removing it and auditing dependencies for similar forks is recommended. Monitor for suspicious WhatsApp channel subscriptions and revoke unauthorized ones if possible.
