Source: GCVE Database
Product: bigops-products-deposits

Description

The bigops-products-deposits npm package version 35.9.1 contains malicious code that executes automatically upon requiring the package. It downloads a binary payload from obfuscated endpoints using HTTPS and a DNS TXT fallback channel, writes it to temporary system directories under disguised filenames, sets executable permissions, and executes it detached from the parent process. This behavior results in remote code execution on the host where the package is installed. The package also uses a state file to masquerade as telemetry data.

Technical Analysis

The bigops-products-deposits npm package (version 35.9.1) includes a malicious runtime script that triggers on package import. This script selects a platform-specific endpoint and downloads a binary payload over HTTPS from reconstructed hostnames, with a fallback mechanism using DNS TXT records encoded in chunked base64. The downloaded binary is saved to temporary directories with names resembling legitimate system diagnostic files, permissions are set to executable (chmod 0755), and the binary is launched detached via shell commands or Windows cmd using unref(). This results in remote code execution on the installer host. The package uses a state file named analytics_state to disguise its activity as telemetry.

Potential Impact

Successful installation and use of this package version leads to remote code execution on the host system, allowing an attacker to run arbitrary code with the privileges of the user installing the package. This can compromise system integrity, confidentiality, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented for this malicious package version. Users should avoid installing or using bigops-products-deposits version 35.9.1. Remove any installations of this package from systems and audit for potential compromise. Monitor for similar malicious packages in the supply chain. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or trusted sources for current remediation guidance.
