Description

The npm package bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-badge version 35.6.8 contains malicious code that downloads and executes a platform-specific binary from obfuscated Cloudflare Workers endpoints. This binary is written to a hidden temporary file with executable permissions and spawned detached, enabling remote code execution. The package masquerades as a UI badge component but performs unauthorized fetch-and-execute operations unrelated to its stated purpose. A sibling module within the package also contains similar dropper functionality. Any system with this package installed should be considered fully compromised, and all secrets and keys must be rotated immediately from a different machine.

Technical Analysis

The bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-badge npm package (version 35.6.8) includes malicious code that, upon requiring the package, unconditionally loads a polyfill script which downloads a platform-specific binary from obfuscated Cloudflare Workers endpoints. The binary is reconstructed at runtime to evade detection, saved as a hidden executable file in temporary directories, permissioned to execute, and then spawned detached via shell commands. Additionally, a sibling telemetry module contains the same dropper primitives, indicating a second-stage or alternate loader. This behavior is unrelated to the package's advertised UI badge functionality. The compromise allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the host system, effectively granting full control.

Potential Impact

Systems with this package installed are fully compromised, as the malicious code downloads and executes arbitrary binaries with elevated permissions. This can lead to complete system takeover, data exfiltration, and persistent unauthorized access. All secrets and keys stored on the compromised system should be considered exposed and must be rotated immediately from a secure, uncompromised environment. Removing the package alone does not guarantee removal of all malicious artifacts or backdoors.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently available. Immediate removal of the bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-badge package version 35.6.8 is strongly recommended. All credentials and secrets stored on affected systems must be rotated from a different, secure machine. Due to the high likelihood of full system compromise, affected hosts should be thoroughly inspected and potentially rebuilt to ensure complete eradication of malicious components.
