Description

The npm package bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-dolyame-button version 35.1.8 contains malicious code that downloads and executes an attacker-controlled binary on the host system. This binary is fetched from hardcoded Cloudflare Workers hostnames and fallback domains without any signature verification, allowing remote code execution upon installation or require. The malicious payload uses obfuscation techniques to evade detection and runs detached processes on Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms. Any system with this package installed should be considered fully compromised, and all secrets and keys on that system should be rotated immediately.

Technical Analysis

The npm package bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-dolyame-button version 35.1.8 includes code that, upon require, loads a setup script which selects a platform-specific binary to download over HTTPS from attacker-controlled Cloudflare Workers hostnames and fallback domains. The binary is saved to a disguised temporary path, permissions are set to executable, and it is spawned detached via shell commands. The code reconstructs sensitive API names and destination hostnames at runtime to evade static detection. There is no cryptographic verification of the downloaded payload, and the destinations are unrelated to the package publisher. This results in arbitrary code execution on the host system when the package is installed or required.

Potential Impact

Installing or requiring this package version results in execution of attacker-controlled binaries on the host system, leading to full system compromise. Attackers gain the ability to execute arbitrary code, potentially access all stored secrets and keys, and maintain persistence. The compromise is severe enough that removing the package does not guarantee removal of all malicious artifacts. Immediate secret rotation is necessary to mitigate credential exposure.

Defensive Guidance

Remove the affected package version 35.1.8 immediately from all systems. Consider all systems with this package installed as fully compromised and perform secret and key rotation from a clean environment. There is no known patch or fixed version available. Monitor for any suspicious activity related to this package and avoid installing or requiring it. Since the package downloads unsigned binaries from attacker-controlled hosts, do not trust any binaries executed by this package.
