Description

The npm package bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-faq-item version 35.8.2 contains malicious code that downloads and executes attacker-controlled binaries on the host machine. Upon requiring or importing the package, it fetches platform-specific binaries from obfuscated Cloudflare Workers URLs and a DNS-TXT fallback, writes them to temporary locations, sets executable permissions, and runs them detached. This behavior occurs automatically during module load, disguising its activity with benign-looking filenames. No patch or fix information is currently available.

Technical Analysis

The npm package bnpl-blocks-atom-bnpl-faq-item version 35.8.2 includes a malicious payload embedded in its main entry point. The index.js file requires a helper script (_ext.js) that downloads a platform-specific binary from hardcoded Cloudflare Workers hosts, using string manipulation to evade static detection. If the primary download fails, it falls back to retrieving base64-encoded chunks via DNS-TXT records from a secondary domain. The downloaded binary is saved to a temporary directory with a randomized filename, given executable permissions, and executed detached from the parent process using system shell commands. The package also creates a stamp file and uses filename disguises to blend into normal system activity. Any import or require of this package triggers this download-and-execute behavior, resulting in execution of opaque attacker-controlled code on the user's machine.

Potential Impact

This malicious package enables remote code execution on any system that installs or imports it, allowing attackers to run arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the Node.js process. The downloaded binaries are attacker-controlled and opaque, meaning the exact payload and capabilities are unknown but potentially severe. This compromises the security and integrity of the affected system, potentially leading to data theft, system compromise, or further malware deployment.

Defensive Guidance

No official patch or remediation is currently available for this malicious package version. Users should immediately remove the package version 35.8.2 from their projects and dependency trees. Avoid installing or importing this package until a trusted, verified version is released. Employ supply chain security best practices such as verifying package integrity and using trusted sources. Monitor for any suspicious activity related to this package and consider scanning affected systems for signs of compromise.
