Description

The npm package 'checkout-storybook-default' version 35.5.1 contains malicious code that, upon requiring the package, loads a polyfill script which reconstructs command-and-control hostnames at runtime. It downloads an opaque binary payload over HTTPS using a spoofed user-agent and can fallback to a covert DNS-TXT channel. The payload is saved to a hidden cache path with a decoy filename, given executable permissions, and executed detached from the parent process. The malware includes sandbox evasion techniques and uses marker files to prevent repeated execution. This behavior is unrelated to the package's stated functionality.

Technical Analysis

The malicious code in 'checkout-storybook-default' version 35.5.1 activates on package import by loading _polyfill.js, which dynamically reconstructs command-and-control server hostnames. It selects an endpoint based on platform and downloads a binary payload over HTTPS with a spoofed node-fetch User-Agent header. If that fails, it uses a fallback covert channel via DNS-TXT queries to *.dl.wel1.ru domains. The payload is stored in a hidden cache directory under /tmp or %TEMP% with a decoy filename, permissions set to executable (0755), and then executed detached via shell commands (/bin/sh or cmd). A marker file containing the process ID prevents re-execution, and environment variable checks provide sandbox evasion. This malicious behavior is unrelated to the package's intended purpose and indicates supply chain compromise or malicious package insertion.

Potential Impact

This malicious package can execute arbitrary code on the host system by downloading and running a hidden binary payload from attacker-controlled servers. It can establish covert command-and-control communication channels, evade sandbox detection, and persist execution without user knowledge. This poses a significant risk of system compromise, data theft, or further malware deployment on affected systems using this package version.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is provided in the available data. Users should immediately remove and avoid using 'checkout-storybook-default' version 35.5.1. Verify package integrity and source before installation. Monitor for suspicious processes or files matching the described behavior. Check vendor advisories or trusted security sources for updates or fixes. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
