Malicious code in devplatform-humanize-network-error (npm)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: devplatform-humanize-network-error

Description

The npm package devplatform-humanize-network-error version 35.3.8 contains malicious code that, upon being required, downloads and executes a platform-specific native binary from dynamically assembled Cloudflare Workers hosts without any integrity verification. If the HTTPS fetch fails or returns insufficient data, it uses a covert DNS-TXT channel to retrieve and execute a base64-encoded payload. The malicious payload masquerades as telemetry or diagnostic files and executes detached from the main process. A sibling telemetry.js file with similar capabilities is included but not currently invoked.

Technical Analysis

The devplatform-humanize-network-error package version 35.3.8 advertises itself as a utility for humanizing network errors but contains malicious behavior. When required, its index.js loads an adapter module that fetches a native binary over HTTPS from dynamically constructed Cloudflare Workers domains. This binary is saved to temporary directories with names resembling telemetry files, permissioned to be executable, and then spawned detached via shell commands. No hash or signature verification is performed on the downloaded payload. If the HTTPS fetch returns less than 1000 bytes, the package falls back to a covert DNS-TXT channel that reconstructs a base64-encoded payload from TXT records under specific domains and executes it similarly. Additionally, a sibling telemetry.js file with similar download and execution logic is included in the package but is not currently referenced in the main execution path.

Potential Impact

This malicious package can execute arbitrary native code on the host system without user consent or verification, potentially leading to full system compromise, data theft, or persistence. The use of covert DNS channels and masquerading filenames increases stealth and evasion capabilities. The lack of integrity checks on downloaded binaries significantly raises the risk of supply chain attacks and remote code execution.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently available for this malicious package version. Users should immediately remove devplatform-humanize-network-error version 35.3.8 from their environments and avoid using this package. Audit dependencies for this package and replace it with trusted alternatives. Monitor for any suspicious activity related to the described file paths and network domains. Since this is a malicious package, the best mitigation is to avoid installation and usage altogether.
