Malicious code in devplatform-nx-svelte (npm)

0
Critical
Published: 08/05/2026 (08/05/2026, 13:48:36 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: devplatform-nx-svelte

Description

The devplatform-nx-svelte npm package version 35.6.8 contains malicious code that performs unauthenticated remote code execution upon import. It constructs command-and-control hostnames dynamically to evade detection, downloads a platform-specific executable from suspicious Cloudflare Workers subdomains, and uses a DNS-TXT covert channel as a fallback to retrieve payload data. The payload is saved with disguised filenames, given executable permissions on Unix, and executed detached from the main process. The package masquerades as legitimate Nx/Svelte tooling and includes misleading telemetry-related naming to conceal its malicious behavior. No integrity verification is performed on the downloaded payload.

Technical Analysis

This threat involves the devplatform-nx-svelte npm package at version 35.6.8, which contains embedded malicious code in its _compat.js file. Upon requiring the package, it dynamically constructs C2 hostnames by joining split string fragments to evade static analysis. It downloads a platform-specific executable payload from Cloudflare Workers subdomains (e.g., oob-worker.cf1**-***.workers.dev). If this fails, it uses a DNS-TXT record covert channel to reassemble base64-encoded chunks from specific domains (c.<subdomain>.dl.wel1.ru and N.<subdomain>.dl.wel1.ru). The payload is written to a temporary path with disguised filenames such as dotnet_diag_*.exe or .cache_*, permissions are set to executable (chmod 755) on Unix systems, and it is launched detached via shell commands. The package includes misleading telemetry-related markers and an opt-out flag to disguise the dropper as legitimate telemetry functionality. The payload is opaque, unauthenticated, and the package is not published by the legitimate vendor, indicating a supply chain compromise or impersonation attack. No patch or remediation information is provided.

Potential Impact

The malicious package enables unauthenticated remote code execution on any system that imports it, allowing arbitrary code to run with the privileges of the user installing or running the package. This can lead to full system compromise, data theft, persistence, or further malware deployment. The lack of integrity verification on the downloaded payload increases the risk of arbitrary and potentially evolving malicious code execution. The package's masquerade as legitimate tooling increases the likelihood of inadvertent installation and exploitation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix or removal notice is issued, avoid using or installing the devplatform-nx-svelte package version 35.6.8. Verify package authenticity before installation and consider scanning for this package in your environment. Remove any instances of this package and monitor for suspicious network activity related to the described C2 domains. Use trusted sources and official registries for npm packages to reduce supply chain risk.
