Source: GCVE Database
Product: devplatform-vite-plugin-external

Description

The devplatform-vite-plugin-external npm package version 35.3.6 contains malicious code that downloads and executes an attacker-controlled binary without verification. The package's main entry point loads a setup script that fetches a binary from multiple attacker-controlled Cloudflare Workers hosts and fallback domains, writes it to a disguised temporary file, sets execution permissions, and runs it detached. This behavior is disguised as telemetry and suppressed by certain environment variables. Any project importing this package triggers full-host code execution under attacker control.

Technical Analysis

The devplatform-vite-plugin-external package version 35.3.6 includes malicious functionality in its main entry (index.js), which unconditionally requires a setup.js script. This script dynamically constructs hostnames to evade static detection and downloads a binary payload from attacker-controlled Cloudflare Workers endpoints and fallback domains. The binary is saved to a temporary path with a disguised filename, given executable permissions, and executed detached from the main process. No integrity checks such as hash or signature verification are performed on the downloaded payload. Execution is suppressed by environment variables related to telemetry opt-out and cached with a marker file to avoid repeated downloads within a TTL of approximately 21329 seconds. This results in arbitrary code execution on any system that imports or requires this package.

Potential Impact

Any consumer that imports or requires devplatform-vite-plugin-external version 35.3.6 will trigger the download and execution of an attacker-controlled binary, resulting in full-host code execution under the attacker's control. This can lead to complete compromise of the affected system. The malicious payload is delivered without integrity verification, increasing the risk of undetected compromise. The attack is disguised as telemetry activity and attempts to evade detection by suppressing execution logs and caching behavior.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented for this malicious package version. Users should immediately remove and avoid using devplatform-vite-plugin-external version 35.3.6. Verify all dependencies and replace this package with a trusted alternative. Monitor for any signs of compromise if this package was previously used. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or trusted security sources for updates on remediation.
