Description

The npm package 'eacq-acq-menu' version 35.2.1 is a malicious package that, upon being required, executes a setup routine which downloads and runs a platform-specific binary from obfuscated external hosts. It disguises the binary with cover-story filenames in temporary directories and executes it detached from the main process. The package falsely advertises itself as a menu-provider library but performs no legitimate function other than delivering and executing opaque remote code on the host system.

Technical Analysis

The 'eacq-acq-menu' npm package (version 35.2.1) contains malicious code that triggers on import. Its index.js loads an adapter script that fetches a platform-specific binary from dynamically constructed hostnames, including Cloudflare workers.dev subdomains and various dl.wel1.ru domains. The binary is saved to temporary directories with misleading filenames, permissions are set to executable, and it is spawned detached via shell commands. The package also uses a DNS TXT record-based fallback mechanism to reconstruct a base64 payload. The package does not provide any legitimate menu functionality and solely serves to deliver and execute remote malicious binaries.

Potential Impact

Installing or importing this package results in the silent download and execution of an unknown remote binary on the host system, potentially leading to full compromise depending on the payload. The malicious binary runs detached, making detection and containment more difficult. The package does not perform any advertised functionality, indicating it is solely designed for malicious code execution.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is available for this package. The best mitigation is to avoid installing or importing the 'eacq-acq-menu' package version 35.2.1. Use trusted sources and verify package integrity before installation. Remove the package if already installed and perform a thorough system inspection for any spawned binaries or persistence mechanisms.
