Malicious code in easypanel-deploy (npm)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: easypanel-deploy

Description

The npm package easypanel-deploy version 1.0.0 contains malicious code that executes during the preinstall lifecycle script. This code collects host identifiers such as hostname, username, current directory, and CI environment variables, encodes them, and sends them to an attacker-controlled domain without user consent. The package behaves like a dependency-confusion beacon, exfiltrating reconnaissance data to a hardcoded third-party endpoint. Although labeled as a 'benign canary' in the source, the behavior is consistent with malicious activity.

Technical Analysis

The easypanel-deploy npm package version 1.0.0 includes a preinstall script that automatically runs on installation. This script gathers system information including os.hostname(), os.userInfo().username, the current working directory, and environment variable names related to CI systems. It base64url-encodes this data and sends it via DNS lookup and HTTP GET requests to a hardcoded external domain (oob.lyomeri.com). This exfiltration occurs without user consent and aligns with known dependency-confusion or beacon package tactics. The presence of an in-source comment calling this a 'benign canary' does not mitigate the unauthorized data collection and transmission.

Potential Impact

The impact involves unauthorized collection and exfiltration of host reconnaissance data during package installation. This compromises user privacy and may facilitate further targeted attacks by revealing system and environment details to an attacker-controlled server. No direct code execution beyond the preinstall script is described, and no known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented. Users should avoid installing easypanel-deploy version 1.0.0. Monitor for updates or advisories from the package maintainers or npm registry. Consider auditing dependencies for unexpected preinstall scripts and blocking network traffic to suspicious domains such as oob.lyomeri.com. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or npm security advisories for current remediation guidance.
