Malicious code in enbd-react-lib (npm)

0
Critical
Published: 07/06/2026 (07/06/2026, 00:00:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: enbd-react-lib

Description

The enbd-react-lib package on npm is a malicious package published to mimic an internal private package naming convention of a target organization, aiming to exploit dependency confusion. It contains a preinstall script that sends telemetry data including the installer's public IP and host environment details to an attacker-controlled Sentry project. The package also silently relays downstream application exceptions and user data to the attacker’s Sentry endpoint if initialized without a custom DSN. This behavior enables reconnaissance and potential compromise of affected systems. The package version 8.0.0 is confirmed malicious. Removal alone may not fully remediate the compromise, and secret rotation is advised.

Technical Analysis

The [email protected] npm package was published by an attacker under the user 'click2ai' to impersonate an internal Emirates NBD React library, exploiting dependency confusion. It declares a preinstall hook that executes a script initializing a Sentry client with sendDefaultPii enabled, sending the installer's public IP and host telemetry to an attacker-controlled Sentry project (ID 4511675212038149). The package's main code also uses this hardcoded DSN to relay downstream application exceptions and user data to the attacker if no other DSN is provided. This enables the attacker to identify successful installs and collect sensitive environment data. The package contains no legitimate functionality related to the claimed internal library and is part of a broader reconnaissance campaign. Systems with this package installed should be considered fully compromised.

Potential Impact

Installation of [email protected] results in automatic exfiltration of sensitive telemetry data including public IP address, hostname, OS username, and runtime environment metadata to an attacker-controlled Sentry endpoint without user consent. Additionally, downstream application errors and user data may be silently relayed to the attacker. This compromises confidentiality and potentially integrity of the affected system and any applications using this package. The presence of this package indicates a full compromise, requiring secret and key rotation. Removal of the package alone does not guarantee full remediation.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is available for this malicious package. Immediate removal of [email protected] is required. Because the package executes code at install time that may have compromised the system, all secrets and keys stored on the affected computer should be rotated from a separate, trusted system. Investigate for further persistence or additional malicious software. Avoid installing packages from untrusted or suspicious sources, and verify internal package naming conventions to prevent dependency confusion attacks.
