Description

The npm package 'hydration-dim-kit' version 1.0.0 contains a malicious native Linux ELF binary disguised as a math accelerator. This binary is a REDSHELL remote-access implant that connects to a hardcoded command and control server, enabling full remote control including shell execution, proxying, port forwarding, credential theft, and file exfiltration. The implant persists by installing a disguised systemd user service to survive reboots. The package's stated purpose and filenames are deceptive cover stories. Any system with this package installed should be considered fully compromised.

Technical Analysis

The 'hydration-dim-kit' npm package version 1.0.0 includes a bundled Linux x86_64 ELF binary at dist/internal/calc.dat, which is verified by SHA-256 on import, made executable, and spawned detached. Although presented as a native math accelerator, the binary is identified as a REDSHELL remote-access implant. It beacons to a hardcoded C2 IP (217.60.77.63) using a specific framing protocol. The implant provides a comprehensive remote command interface including shell execution, SOCKS5 proxying, TCP port forwarding, downloading and executing ELF binaries and shellcode in memory, access to SSH keys, credentials, environment variables, user management, clipboard access, database search, and a chunked file exfiltration mechanism. For persistence, it installs a systemd user service named 'svc-update.service' that runs the implant on user login and restarts automatically. The package's naming and documentation are deceptive, masking the implant's true malicious functionality.

Potential Impact

Systems with this package installed are fully compromised, allowing attackers remote control over the system, including execution of arbitrary commands, credential theft, network proxying, and data exfiltration. Persistence mechanisms ensure the implant survives system reboots. All secrets and keys on affected systems are at risk and should be considered compromised.

Defensive Guidance

Immediate removal of the 'hydration-dim-kit' package version 1.0.0 is required. However, due to the implant's extensive control and persistence mechanisms, removal of the package alone may not fully eradicate the threat. It is critical to consider the system fully compromised, rotate all secrets and keys from a separate, trusted environment, and perform a thorough incident response including system reimaging if necessary. No official patch or fix is available; remediation relies on removal and comprehensive recovery procedures.
