Malicious code in noxleyss (npm)

0
Medium
Source: GCVE Database
Product: noxleyss

Description

The noxleyss npm package is part of a large family of malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library that inject code to silently subscribe the victim's WhatsApp account to attacker-controlled channels without user consent. This is done by issuing an authenticated FOLLOW query using the victim's own WhatsApp session. The targeted channel IDs are obfuscated or dynamically fetched, allowing attackers to change targets post-installation. The malicious code does not steal credentials, maintain persistence, or execute arbitrary remote code.

Technical Analysis

The noxleyss package (versions 1.0.0 through 1.1.11) belongs to a family of over 100 near-identical malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library. These forks inject a covert subscription action into the WhatsApp socket layer, which, upon connection, issues an authenticated 'w:mex' FOLLOW query to attacker-chosen WhatsApp Channel/Newsletter JIDs. The victim's authenticated WhatsApp session is abused to silently subscribe them to channels without their knowledge. The targeted JIDs are hidden using various obfuscation methods or fetched dynamically from attacker-controlled remote sources, enabling flexible targeting. The malicious behavior is consistent across the family despite differences in package names and obfuscation techniques. The attack does not involve credential theft, persistence, or arbitrary code execution.

Potential Impact

The impact is limited to unauthorized subscription of the victim's WhatsApp account to attacker-controlled channels or newsletters. This could result in unwanted messages or spam from these channels. There is no credential compromise, no persistence mechanism, and no arbitrary code execution, limiting the scope of the threat to unwanted channel subscriptions.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is provided in the available data. Users should avoid installing or using the noxleyss package and other related malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library. Review and audit dependencies carefully before installation. Since this is a client-side abuse of the WhatsApp session, removing the malicious package and revoking session tokens or re-authenticating WhatsApp sessions may help mitigate the issue. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or npm security advisories for current remediation guidance.
