Description

The npm package 'pfp-integration-mobile-heading' version 20.7.1 contains malicious code that, upon being required, downloads and executes an attacker-controlled binary. This binary is fetched via obfuscated Cloudflare Workers hosts or a covert DNS-TXT channel, saved under disguised filenames, and executed on the host system. The package falsely advertises device integration functionality but instead compromises the host by executing unauthorized code. Any system with this package installed should be considered fully compromised, and secrets stored on it should be rotated immediately.

Technical Analysis

The 'pfp-integration-mobile-heading' npm package version 20.7.1 includes malicious behavior triggered on import. The package's _bootstrap.js script selects a platform-specific binary path and downloads an opaque executable over HTTPS from obfuscated Cloudflare Workers hosts, using string-splitting to evade static detection. If that fails, it falls back to a covert DNS-TXT channel that reconstructs a base64-encoded payload from multiple TXT records. The payload is saved to temporary directories with filenames mimicking legitimate dotnet diagnostic and analytics files, permissions are set to executable, and the binary is launched detached via shell commands. Environment variables related to telemetry gate execution as a cover story. The package does not perform any legitimate device integration but instead executes attacker-controlled code, effectively compromising the host system.

Potential Impact

Systems with this package installed and running are fully compromised, as the package downloads and executes arbitrary attacker-controlled binaries with system-level execution. This can lead to complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. All secrets and keys stored on the compromised system should be considered exposed and must be rotated immediately from a secure environment. Removal of the package alone does not guarantee eradication of all malicious components due to potential persistence mechanisms.

Defensive Guidance

Immediate removal of the 'pfp-integration-mobile-heading' package version 20.7.1 is required. All secrets and credentials stored on the affected system should be rotated from a different, trusted device. Because the package executes attacker-controlled binaries, assume full system compromise and perform a thorough incident response, including system reimaging if necessary. There is no known patch or official fix available; patch status is not confirmed. Monitor vendor advisories for updates. Avoid installing or using this package version.
