Description

The npm package polygon-gama-apis version 1.4.1 contains malicious code that executes arbitrary JavaScript fetched from a remote server. This remote code execution occurs when the package's exported getPlugin() function invokes JavaScript delivered in a disguised field, granting full control to the attacker. The package metadata is deceptive, aiming to lure installs from multiple ecosystems. The package includes dependencies consistent with credential and wallet-stealing malware. Any system with this package installed should be considered fully compromised.

Technical Analysis

The polygon-gama-apis npm package (version 1.4.1) exports a function getPlugin() that fetches JSON from a remote URL (https://bet.slotgambit.com/icons/111). It then executes the JavaScript code contained in the 'credits' field of the response using the JavaScript Function constructor with full Node.js context, enabling arbitrary code execution. The package metadata is misleading, with conflicting names and descriptions to attract installs from different developer communities. Bundled dependencies indicate the payload includes credential and wallet-stealing capabilities. This behavior effectively grants the remote operator full control over the host running the package.

Potential Impact

Systems with polygon-gama-apis version 1.4.1 installed or running are fully compromised, as the package executes arbitrary remote code with full Node.js privileges. This can lead to theft of secrets, credentials, and wallets. The attacker gains persistent and extensive control over the affected system. Immediate secret and key rotation is required from a clean environment due to the high likelihood of compromise.

Mitigation Recommendations

Remove the polygon-gama-apis package version 1.4.1 immediately from all systems. Consider all affected systems fully compromised and rotate all secrets and keys from a different, uncompromised device. There is no known patch or fixed version available. Monitor for any signs of persistent malicious activity and rebuild affected systems if possible.
