Description

The npm package 'react-shield' versions 1.10.2, 1.10.3, and 1.10.4 contains malicious code or depends on a malicious package. Installing or running this package can lead to full compromise of the affected computer. Secrets and keys stored on the compromised system should be rotated immediately from a different machine. Technical Analysis

The 'react-shield' npm package in versions 1.10.2, 1.10.3, and 1.10.4 has been identified as containing malicious code or relying on a dependency that contains malicious code. This malicious code can fully compromise any computer where the package is installed or executed. Due to the nature of the compromise, attackers may gain full control over the system, potentially accessing sensitive information such as secrets and keys. The package removal does not guarantee complete remediation because the attacker may have installed additional persistent malicious components.

Potential Impact

Any system with the affected versions of 'react-shield' installed should be considered fully compromised. Attackers may have gained full control over the system, leading to potential data theft, unauthorized access, and persistent malicious presence. All secrets and keys stored on the compromised system are at risk and must be rotated immediately from a secure environment.

Defensive Guidance

Immediate removal of the 'react-shield' package versions 1.10.2, 1.10.3, and 1.10.4 is required. However, because the system may be fully compromised, it is critical to assume that removing the package alone is insufficient. All secrets and keys stored on the affected system should be rotated from a different, uncompromised machine. A full system investigation and potential rebuild may be necessary to ensure complete eradication of malicious components.
