Source: GCVE Database
Product: react-tabulix-virtual

Description

The npm package 'react-tabulix-virtual' versions 0.1.0 and 0.1.1 contains malicious code that executes during installation. The package's preinstall script runs a JavaScript file that fetches and evaluates remote code from an obfuscated URL, allowing arbitrary code execution with the installer's privileges. This behavior is hidden through base64 encoding and character code assembly to evade detection.

Technical Analysis

The 'react-tabulix-virtual' npm package versions 0.1.0 and 0.1.1 declare a preinstall script that automatically executes on 'npm install'. This script runs a JavaScript file ('dist/index.d.js') containing a base64-encoded string which decodes to an 'eval' call that fetches and executes JavaScript from 'https://everydaynodechecker-39143n.vercel.app/api/key?mem=root1'. The 'eval' function name is reconstructed at runtime from character codes to avoid static detection. This results in remote code execution with the privileges of the user installing the package. The OpenSSF Package Analysis project identified this package as malicious due to this behavior.

Potential Impact

Installing the affected versions of 'react-tabulix-virtual' results in execution of arbitrary remote JavaScript code with the installer's privileges. This can lead to compromise of the development environment, potential theft of credentials or secrets, and further malicious activity depending on the fetched code. The obfuscation of the code and remote fetching increases the risk of undetected compromise.

Mitigation Recommendations

Avoid using the 'react-tabulix-virtual' package versions 0.1.0 and 0.1.1. Since no official patch or remediation is indicated, do not install or remove these versions from your projects. Use trusted package sources and verify package integrity before installation. Monitor for updates from the package maintainer or npm advisories for any official fixes.
