Malicious code in sme-rko-finance-front-operations-domain (npm)

Source: GCVE Database
Product: sme-rko-finance-front-operations-domain

Description

The npm package sme-rko-finance-front-operations-domain version 35.8.1 contains malicious code that downloads and executes a native binary from obfuscated hostnames. It uses runtime-assembled domain names and base64-decoded payloads to evade detection and bypass network egress controls. The malicious binary is saved to temporary directories with disguised filenames and executed detached from the main process. A fallback DNS-TXT channel is used to retrieve payloads if HTTPS download fails. The package includes a telemetry module that duplicates the dropper functionality. There is no integrity verification of the downloaded payload, making it opaque and unverifiable.

Technical Analysis

This threat involves a malicious npm package (sme-rko-finance-front-operations-domain version 35.8.1) that, upon being required, executes an asynchronous initializer which constructs obfuscated platform-specific hostnames to download a native binary over HTTPS. The binary is saved under disguised names in temporary directories, permissioned to be executable, and spawned detached from the main process. If HTTPS retrieval fails, a DNS-TXT record fallback channel reconstructs and base64-decodes the payload, bypassing HTTP egress controls. The package's telemetry component also contains similar dropper code, providing a redundant execution path. Hostnames and critical functions are dynamically assembled at runtime to evade static analysis. No integrity checks or publisher verification exist for the downloaded payload, which remains opaque and unverifiable.

Potential Impact

The malicious package enables remote code execution by downloading and running an arbitrary native binary on the host system without integrity verification. The use of obfuscated hostnames and fallback DNS-TXT channels allows it to bypass network controls and evade detection. This can lead to full system compromise, persistence, and potential further malicious activity on affected systems that install this package version.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented. Users should immediately avoid using sme-rko-finance-front-operations-domain version 35.8.1. Remove the package from all environments and replace it with a trusted alternative. Monitor for any signs of compromise related to this package. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or npm security advisories for updates on remediation.
