Malicious code in syncxbails (npm)

0
Medium
Source: GCVE Database
Product: syncxbails

Description

The npm package syncxbails (versions 1.0.0 and 1.0.1) is part of a family of malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library. These forks inject code that silently subscribes the victim's WhatsApp account to attacker-controlled channels using the victim's authenticated session. The target channels are obfuscated or dynamically fetched, allowing attackers to change targets post-installation. The malicious code does not steal credentials, maintain persistence, or execute arbitrary remote code.

Technical Analysis

The syncxbails npm package (versions 1.0.0 and 1.0.1) belongs to a large family of over 100 near-identical malicious forks of the Baileys WhatsApp Web library. These forks inject a covert channel-subscription action into the WhatsApp socket layer. Upon connection, the injected code issues an authenticated 'w:mex' FOLLOW query using the installer's own WhatsApp session to silently subscribe the victim's account to attacker-chosen WhatsApp Channel/Newsletter JIDs. The target JIDs are hidden via obfuscation (string literals, base64, XOR, char-code arrays) or fetched dynamically from attacker-controlled remote sources, enabling runtime changes without republishing the package. The underlying mechanism is a wrapped socket-connect routine firing the FOLLOW query shortly after connection. The malicious action leverages the victim's authenticated session to increase subscribers for attacker channels but does not exfiltrate credentials, establish persistence, or execute arbitrary code.

Potential Impact

Victims unknowingly subscribe their WhatsApp accounts to attacker-controlled channels, potentially exposing them to unwanted content or spam. The attack abuses the victim's authenticated WhatsApp session but does not compromise credentials, create persistence, or allow remote code execution. The impact is primarily unauthorized subscription and potential privacy concerns related to channel membership.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is provided. Users should avoid installing or using the syncxbails package versions 1.0.0 and 1.0.1. Since the malicious behavior relies on the victim's authenticated WhatsApp session, removing the package and re-authenticating or reviewing channel subscriptions in WhatsApp may help. Monitor for updates from the package maintainers or npm advisories for any official fixes. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory or npm security advisories for current remediation guidance.
