Malicious code in tanksync (npm)

Product: tanksync

Description

The npm package 'tanksync' version 1.0.7 contains malicious code that downloads and executes arbitrary JavaScript from a hardcoded remote URL. The package uses a flawed integrity check with a symmetric key embedded in the source, allowing attackers to produce valid signatures for any payload. Execution occurs in a detached Node.js process that continues running after the client closes, potentially compromising the host system. Removal of the package may not fully restore system integrity due to persistent malicious activity.

Technical Analysis

The 'tanksync' npm package (version 1.0.7) implements an API that downloads a JavaScript payload over HTTPS from a hardcoded URL (https://api.helloworld.com/api/realtime-data?key=abc) and executes it via a detached Node.js process. The integrity check uses an HMAC-SHA256 with a symmetric key ('tanksync-secret-key') embedded in the source code, making it trivial for an attacker to forge valid signatures for arbitrary payloads. The detached worker process remains active after the client closes, potentially maintaining unauthorized control. The package's design inherently allows execution of arbitrary remote code, fully compromising any system running it.

Potential Impact

Any system with 'tanksync' version 1.0.7 installed or running is considered fully compromised. Attackers can execute arbitrary code remotely, potentially gaining full control over the host. All secrets and credentials stored on the compromised system should be considered exposed and require immediate rotation from a secure environment. Simply removing the package does not guarantee removal of all malicious components due to persistent detached processes.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is available. Immediate removal of the 'tanksync' package version 1.0.7 is strongly recommended. All secrets and keys on the affected system should be rotated from a different, trusted machine. Due to the persistent nature of the detached worker process, a full system compromise is likely; consider rebuilding or thoroughly cleaning the affected system. Monitor for any unauthorized processes or network activity related to this package.
