Source: GCVE Database

Description

The npm package tivo-codelib-a version 99.9.1 is a malicious package that acts as a hollow lure. It contains an empty stub but declares a runtime dependency on an attacker-controlled tarball hosted on a Google Cloud Storage bucket outside the official npm registry. This external dependency can be swapped at any time to deliver arbitrary malicious code during installation. Systems with this package installed should be considered fully compromised, and all secrets and keys on those systems should be rotated immediately. Removal of the package alone may not fully remediate the compromise.

Technical Analysis

The tivo-codelib-a npm package at version 99.9.1 is a malicious package designed to deliver attacker-controlled code via a runtime dependency declared as a direct HTTPS URL to a Google Cloud Storage bucket. The package itself is an empty stub with blank metadata, but its installation process fetches and installs a tarball from an untrusted source without hash verification, enabling the attacker to change the payload arbitrarily. This pattern matches a dependency-confusion attack where the package name and version lure victims into installing code that resolves to an external, attacker-controlled resource. The compromise is severe, as installing this package grants the attacker potential full control over the affected system.

Potential Impact

Any system that has installed or is running [email protected] is considered fully compromised. The attacker may have executed arbitrary code with the privileges of the installing user. All secrets, keys, and credentials stored on the compromised system are at risk and should be rotated from a trusted environment. Simply removing the package does not guarantee full remediation, as the attacker may have established persistent backdoors or additional malicious software.

Mitigation Recommendations

Remove the tivo-codelib-a package version 99.9.1 immediately from all systems. Rotate all secrets, keys, and credentials that were stored or used on the compromised systems from a separate, trusted machine. Because the attacker may have full control, consider rebuilding or restoring affected systems from known good backups. Monitor for any signs of persistent compromise. There is no official patch or fix for this malicious package; mitigation relies on removal and credential rotation.
