Malicious code in warp-dependency (npm)

0
Critical
Published: 06/13/2026 (06/13/2026, 02:10:04 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: warp-dependency

Description

The npm package 'warp-dependency' version 1.0.0 contains malicious code that executes a heavily obfuscated script during installation. This script downloads and runs an unsigned Windows executable from an anonymous ephemeral tunneling service, unrelated to the package's stated purpose. The package name is a typosquat of the legitimate 'warp' brand. Installing this package results in silent execution of attacker-controlled native code, potentially compromising the entire system. Removal of the package does not guarantee elimination of all malicious components, and any secrets or keys on the affected system should be rotated immediately.

Technical Analysis

The 'warp-dependency' npm package version 1.0.0 declares a postinstall script that runs an obfuscated JavaScript file. This script downloads a Windows executable named 'bss.exe' from 'https://recorder-our-betting-chair.trycloudflare.com/page'—an anonymous ephemeral tunneling service—and executes it using child_process.exec. The executable is unsigned, unhashed, and unrelated to the package's described functionality. The package name is a typosquat of the legitimate 'warp' package. This behavior results in arbitrary native code execution on the installer's machine during npm install, effectively compromising the system.

Potential Impact

Any system that installs 'warp-dependency' version 1.0.0 is at risk of full compromise due to silent execution of attacker-controlled native code. This can lead to unauthorized control over the affected machine, potential data theft, and persistence of malicious software. Secrets and keys stored on the compromised system are considered exposed and should be rotated immediately from a secure environment. Removal of the package alone may not remove all malicious artifacts.

Mitigation Recommendations

There is no official patch or fix available for this malicious package. The recommended mitigation is to immediately remove 'warp-dependency' version 1.0.0 from all affected systems. Additionally, rotate all secrets and keys that were stored on the compromised machines from a different, secure computer. Exercise caution to avoid installing packages with suspicious or typosquatted names. Monitor package sources carefully and prefer official, verified packages.
