Malicious code in @wizloft/harness (npm)

0
Critical
Published: 08/19/2026 (08/19/2026, 08:33:21 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: @wizloft/harness

Description

The npm package @wizloft/harness version 0.1.1-alpha.3 contains malicious code that performs on-chain command and control (C2) operations. Upon import, it queries a public Ethereum smart contract to retrieve a payload string, which is then executed via eval() in the Node.js process, enabling arbitrary remote code execution. The malicious payload is obfuscated and stored on-chain, making it resistant to takedown and invisible to standard registry scanners. This behavior contradicts the package README's claim of having no executable binary.

Technical Analysis

The @wizloft/harness npm package (version 0.1.1-alpha.3) includes a main entrypoint (dist/index.js) that contains obfuscated code implementing an EtherHiding on-chain C2 dropper pattern. The code queries a mutable Ethereum smart contract via public RPC endpoints to fetch an attacker-controlled payload string. This payload is then executed dynamically using eval(), resulting in arbitrary remote code execution within the consumer's Node.js environment. The on-chain storage of the payload evades standard registry detection and takedown mechanisms. The package's README falsely claims no executable binary, despite shipping a large obfuscated JavaScript file.

Potential Impact

This malicious package enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely on any system that installs and imports the affected version of @wizloft/harness. The on-chain payload delivery mechanism makes detection and removal difficult, potentially allowing persistent compromise. There is no indication of active exploitation in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently available for this malicious package. Users should avoid installing or using @wizloft/harness version 0.1.1-alpha.3. Remove any existing installations of this package from projects and dependency trees. Monitor for updates from the package maintainers or npm advisories for any remediation or takedown actions.
