Published: 07/22/2026 (07/22/2026, 22:10:15 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: n8n

Description

An authenticated user with permission to create or modify workflows in n8n can exploit a vulnerability in expression evaluation using arrow functions to escape the sandbox and execute arbitrary system commands on the host. This issue affects n8n versions before 2.31.5 and versions 2.32.0 up to but not including 2.32.1. The vulnerability has been fixed in versions 2.31.5 and 2.32.1. Temporary mitigations include restricting access and workflow editing permissions to fully trusted users until an upgrade can be applied.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in n8n allows an authenticated user with workflow creation or modification permissions to craft expressions using arrow-function bodies that bypass the expression sandbox. This sandbox escape enables unintended system command execution on the host running n8n. The issue is tracked under CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code). It affects versions prior to 2.31.5 and versions 2.32.0 up to but excluding 2.32.1. The vendor has released fixes in versions 2.31.5 and 2.32.1 to address this issue.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation permits an authenticated user with limited privileges to execute arbitrary system commands on the host running n8n, potentially leading to full system compromise or unauthorized actions beyond the intended sandboxed environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade n8n to version 2.31.5 or 2.32.1 or later to fully remediate this vulnerability. If immediate upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the n8n instance and limit workflow creation and editing permissions to fully trusted users only. These workarounds reduce risk but do not fully eliminate it.
