AI-suggested
A patch is available in nbdime version 4.0.4_11 that fixes the validation order to prevent cloning into .git directories before path validation. Users and applications should upgrade to version 4.0.4_11 or later. For versions 3.2.0 and later, although a ValueError is raised on invalid paths, the hook is already planted, so relying on catching this exception is insufficient. Applications should avoid passing untrusted or attacker-controlled paths to create_submodule. No other mitigations are documented.
Description
Nbdime's GitPython integration has a vulnerability where submodule paths are validated too late, allowing cloning into the live .git/hooks directory. This enables planting an attacker-controlled executable hook that runs on subsequent git operations, leading to arbitrary code execution. Versions from 3.1.x through 3.2.0+ are affected, with 3.2.0+ raising a ValueError after the malicious hook is already written. The issue is fixed in version 4.0.4_11.
