Description

A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the RTMP protocol implementation of Apache bRPC versions prior to 1.18.0. This flaw allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by crashing the server when a crafted createStream command is sent and the client closes the connection prematurely.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability occurs in Apache bRPC's RTMP service when it rejects a createStream request by returning a null stream pointer. If the server attempts to send an error response but fails (e.g., due to the client closing the connection immediately), the error-handling code dereferences the null pointer, specifically accessing stream->_onfail_id, leading to a server crash. This affects all platforms running vulnerable versions of Apache bRPC where RtmpService::NewStream() can return null. The issue is fixed in version 1.18.0.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can cause a denial of service by crashing the Apache bRPC server through a crafted createStream command followed by closing the connection before the server sends the rejection response. This results in a server crash due to NULL pointer dereference, impacting availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0, which contains the official fix for this vulnerability. Alternatively, apply the patch available at https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3508. No other mitigations are specified.
