Description

Open Access Management (OpenAM) prior to version 16.1.1 contains a vulnerability in its OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect authorization endpoints. The issue arises because user-supplied parameters are not sufficiently encoded before being rendered into HTML in the form_post response mode, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to induce a user to execute scripts in the OpenAM origin. This vulnerability is fixed in version 16.1.1.

Technical Analysis

OpenAM before version 16.1.1 suffers from insufficient encoding of user-supplied parameters in the OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect authorization endpoint, specifically in the FormPostResponse.ftl and checkSession.ftl templates used for the form_post response mode. This flaw enables an unauthenticated attacker to craft authorization requests that cause script execution in the context of the OpenAM origin, constituting a cross-site scripting vulnerability. The issue is resolved in OpenAM version 16.1.1.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of the OpenAM origin by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted authorization request. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other malicious actions within the affected OpenAM environment. The vulnerability affects the confidentiality and integrity of user sessions.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in OpenAM version 16.1.1. Users should upgrade to version 16.1.1 or later to remediate this issue. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
