Until a fix is available, applications should implement input validation and resource limits on ASN.1 decoding to mitigate CPU exhaustion risks. Avoid decoding untrusted ASN.1 inputs without such controls. Monitor vendor channels for official patches or updates addressing this issue.

Description

pyasn1 versions 0.6.4 and earlier contain a quadratic-time denial of service vulnerability in the decoding of constructed OCTET STRINGs, certain constructed character strings, and indefinite-length ANY types. This occurs because the decoder repeatedly concatenates fragments inefficiently, causing CPU usage to grow quadratically with the number of fragments. An attacker supplying crafted ASN.1 input can cause CPU exhaustion in applications that decode such input without proper limits. The vulnerability affects BER and CER decoding paths and certain non-conforming DER inputs. No confidentiality or integrity impact is reported. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 7.5 (high severity).
