Description

A critical remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2026-109618) affects PHP versions prior to 8.3.36-1.oe2403sp1. The issue arises from improper handling of out-of-memory errors using longjmp(), which can leave request memory uninitialized and lead to use-after-free conditions. This flaw allows attackers to execute arbitrary code remotely. A patch is available to address this vulnerability.

Technical Analysis

PHP uses longjmp() to handle out-of-memory (OOM) errors by aborting the current request context. However, some contexts do not properly initialize request memory after such an event, causing subsequent cleanup procedures to read or branch on uninitialized memory. This can be triggered by multiple OOM strategies, resulting in remote code execution (RCE). Additionally, PHP's global state may temporarily point to request memory that is freed or not correctly reset, leading to stale references that can also be exploited for RCE. These issues are fixed in versions 8.3.36-1.oe2403sp1 and later.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system, potentially leading to full system compromise. The CVSS score of 9.8 reflects the critical nature of this flaw with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

An official patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade PHP to version 8.3.36-1.oe2403sp1 or later to remediate the issue. No additional mitigations are specified by the vendor advisory.
