Plugin scaffolder backend: Backstage: Improper task state validation in Scaffolder backend (CVE-2026-106500)
Description
CVE-2026-106500 is a vulnerability in the @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend prior to version 4.1.0. It allows an authenticated user with permission to create and access Scaffolder tasks to potentially affect files accessible to the backend under certain timing and deployment conditions. If backend application files are writable, this can compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the backend. The issue has been patched in version 4.1.0. Mitigations include restricting task creation and read permissions to trusted users, limiting template registration and actions, and running backend files as read-only outside a dedicated Scaffolder working directory.

Technical Analysis
An improper task state validation vulnerability exists in the Scaffolder backend of the @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend component. Authenticated users with permissions to create and access Scaffolder tasks may, under specific timing and deployment conditions, manipulate files accessible to the backend. This can lead to compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability if backend application files are writable. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-106500 and is patched in version 4.1.0 of the plugin.
Potential Impact
An attacker with authenticated access and appropriate permissions can affect backend files, potentially leading to full compromise of the backend's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This could allow unauthorized modification or disclosure of backend data and disruption of backend services.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend version 4.1.0. Users should upgrade to this version or later. Until patched, restrict Scaffolder task creation and read permissions to trusted users, limit template registration and Scaffolder actions, and run backend application files as read-only outside a dedicated, least-privilege Scaffolder working directory.
