pnpm: Git Fetch Argument Injection via Lockfile resolution.commit (CVE-2026-50014)

0
Medium
Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 17:28:25 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: pnpm

Description

pnpm versions prior to 10.34.0 and 11.4.0 contain a vulnerability where the git resolution.commit value from a lockfile is passed to git fetch without proper validation. This allows injection of git options such as --upload-pack, which can execute arbitrary commands when using SSH or local git transports. The vulnerability is fixed in versions 10.34.0 and 11.4.0.

Technical Analysis

The pnpm package manager versions before 10.34.0 and 11.4.0 improperly handle the git resolution.commit value from lockfiles by passing it directly to git fetch without a '--' separator or commit hash validation. This enables an attacker controlling the lockfile to replace the expected 40-character commit hash with a malicious git option like --upload-pack=<command>. When git dependencies are fetched via SSH or local transports, this option can lead to arbitrary command execution. HTTPS transports ignore this option, limiting the attack surface. The vulnerability is addressed in pnpm versions 10.34.0 and 11.4.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can supply a malicious lockfile can execute arbitrary commands on the system running pnpm by exploiting the injection of git fetch arguments. This impacts confidentiality and integrity but does not affect availability. The attack surface is limited to git dependencies fetched over SSH or local transports.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade pnpm to version 10.34.0 or later, or 11.4.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are specified or required once patched.
