pnpm: hoisted install imports lockfile alias outside node_modules (CVE-2026-59196)
Description
pnpm versions prior to 10.34.4 and 11.7.0 contain a vulnerability where a crafted lockfile alias can cause directory traversal outside the hoisted node_modules directory or overwrite pnpm-owned layout directories. This issue allows manipulation of the package installation layout. The vulnerability is fixed in versions 10.34.4 and 11.7.0.

Technical Analysis
pnpm, a package manager, had a vulnerability (CVE-2026-59196) in versions before 10.34.4 and 11.7.0 where a specially crafted lockfile alias could be joined directly under a hoisted node_modules directory. This allowed traversal aliases to escape the node_modules directory and reserved aliases such as .bin or .pnpm to overwrite pnpm-owned layout directories. This flaw could lead to integrity violations of the package installation layout. The vulnerability has been addressed and fixed in versions 10.34.4 and 11.7.0.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows an attacker to manipulate the package installation layout by escaping the node_modules directory or overwriting critical pnpm-owned directories. This can lead to integrity issues and potentially impact the integrity of installed packages. The CVSS score of 7.1 indicates a high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, unchanged scope, no confidentiality impact, high integrity impact, and low availability impact.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available and has been released in pnpm versions 10.34.4 and 11.7.0. Users should upgrade to at least these versions to remediate the vulnerability.
