pnpm: reserved bin name deletes PNPM_HOME during global remove (CVE-2026-55699)
Description
A vulnerability in pnpm prior to versions 10.34.2 and 11.5.3 allows malicious packages with reserved bin names such as "." or ".." to cause deletion of the PNPM_HOME directory during global package removal operations. This occurs because these reserved names bypass pnpm's bin-name guard and lead to unintended directory removal. The issue is fixed in versions 10.34.2 and 11.5.3.

Technical Analysis
pnpm, a package manager, had a vulnerability (CVE-2026-55699) in versions prior to 10.34.2 and 11.5.3 where manifest bin object keys like "", ".", and ".." were not properly filtered by the bin-name guard. When a malicious package with these reserved bin names was installed globally, subsequent global remove, update, or add-replacement operations could use path.join(globalBinDir, binName) to removeBin, leading to deletion of the global bin directory (for ".") or its parent directory (for ".."), effectively deleting PNPM_HOME. This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 6.5 (medium severity) and is fixed in versions 10.34.2 and 11.5.3.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability can cause deletion of the PNPM_HOME directory during global package removal or update operations if a malicious package with reserved bin names is installed globally. This results in denial of service by removing critical directories used by pnpm, but does not impact confidentiality or integrity directly.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade pnpm to version 10.34.2 or later, or 11.5.3 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is required as the fix is officially released.
