A fix is available in dulwich version 1.2.5 and later. Users should upgrade to version 1.2.5 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Until upgraded, avoid cloning or updating submodules with recurse_submodules=True from untrusted repositories. The vendor advisory confirms the availability of an official fix.
Description
Dulwich versions from 0.23.2 up to but not including 1.2.5 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the submodule update and clone functions when recurse_submodules is enabled. An attacker can craft a malicious upstream repository with a .gitmodules file and a matching gitlink entry that specifies a submodule path inside the parent repository's .git directory, such as .git/hooks. This causes the attacker's submodule contents to be written directly into the victim's .git/hooks directory with executable permissions, leading to arbitrary code execution when git hooks are triggered.
