Prior to 8.4.0, Streamlink's HLS and DASH parsers do not validate the URI scheme of segment entries and other resources. (CVE-2026-44353)
Description
Streamlink versions prior to 8.4.0 have a vulnerability in their HLS and DASH parsers where the URI scheme of segment entries and other resources is not validated. This allows a remote playlist or manifest to specify local file URIs, causing Streamlink to read local files and output their contents. The issue is fixed in version 8.4.0.

Technical Analysis
Streamlink is a command-line utility that pipes video streams into a video player. Before version 8.4.0, its HLS and DASH parsers did not validate the URI schemes of segment entries, allowing remote .m3u8 or .mpd manifests to include file:// URIs. This causes Streamlink to read local files referenced by these URIs and write their contents to the output stream, potentially exposing local file data. The vulnerability is addressed in Streamlink 8.4.0.
Potential Impact
An attacker controlling a remote HLS or DASH playlist can cause Streamlink to read arbitrary local files on the system where Streamlink is running and output their contents. This can lead to unauthorized disclosure of local file data. There is no indication of integrity or availability impact. The CVSS score is 6.5 (medium severity) with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, and high confidentiality impact.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade Streamlink to version 8.4.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are specified or required.
