Description
Suricata versions prior to 7.0.16 and 8.0.5 have a vulnerability in the HTTP/2 decompression path where the decompressed response-body buffer can grow without an effective upper bound. This can lead to excessive memory allocation when processing crafted HTTP/2 DATA payloads with high compression ratios such as gzip, deflate, or brotli. The issue is fixed in versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5. A workaround is to disable HTTP/2 processing.

Technical Analysis
Suricata, a network IDS/IPS and monitoring engine, contains a vulnerability (CVE-2026-46387) in its HTTP/2 decompression path in versions prior to 7.0.16 and 8.0.5. The decompressed response-body buffer can grow without an effective upper bound when handling crafted HTTP/2 DATA frames compressed with high-ratio algorithms like gzip, deflate, or brotli. This can cause Suricata to allocate excessive memory, potentially leading to denial of service conditions. The vulnerability is addressed in Suricata versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5. Disabling HTTP/2 is a recommended workaround if patching is not immediately possible.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability can cause Suricata to allocate excessive memory during decompression of crafted HTTP/2 payloads, leading to potential denial of service (DoS) due to resource exhaustion. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported. The CVSS score is 7.5 (high impact on availability).
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in Suricata versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5. Users should upgrade to these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability. As a temporary workaround, disabling HTTP/2 processing in Suricata can prevent exploitation of this issue.
