Red Hat has released an official security update for fence-agents packages that addresses the authentication bypass vulnerability in python-pyjwt (CVE-2026-48526). Users should apply the update as described in the Red Hat advisory RHSA-2026:35836. Detailed instructions for applying the update are available at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official patch.
Description
A security update for the fence-agents packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux addresses an authentication bypass vulnerability in the python-pyjwt library due to forged JSON Web Tokens (CVE-2026-48526). Fence-agents are used for remote power management in cluster environments, allowing failed or unreachable nodes to be forcibly restarted and removed. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to bypass authentication mechanisms relying on PyJWT. The update is rated as important by Red Hat Product Security and affects multiple Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4 variants.
