Technical Analysis

Two vulnerabilities in FreeRDP (CVE-2026-26965 and CVE-2026-26955) allow arbitrary code execution via heap out-of-bounds write in the RLE planar decode path and heap buffer overflow in the GDI surface pipeline, respectively. These issues affect the freerdp client used to connect to RDP servers. Red Hat Product Security has released an update for freerdp in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 Update Services for SAP Solutions to fix these vulnerabilities. The advisory references updated freerdp packages version 2.4.1-3.el9_0.2 for multiple architectures including aarch64, x86_64, ppc64le, and s390x.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system via specially crafted RDP data processed by the freerdp client. This could lead to compromise of the client system running the vulnerable freerdp version. The vulnerabilities are rated with high severity by Red Hat Product Security.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released an official security update for freerdp in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 Update Services for SAP Solutions. Users should apply the updated freerdp packages (version 2.4.1-3.el9_0.2) provided by Red Hat to remediate these vulnerabilities. Refer to Red Hat advisory RHSA-2026:6395 and the update article https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258 for detailed instructions. Patch status is confirmed as official-fix by Red Hat.
