Description

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), released under the Apache license. The xfreerdp client can connect to RDP servers such as Microsoft Windows machines, xrdp, and VirtualBox. Security Fix(es): * FreeRDP: FreeRDP: Heap buffer overflow allows arbitrary code execution via crafted pixel data (CVE-2026-33984) * FreeRDP: FreeRDP: Denial of Service via specially crafted Remote Desktop Protocol messages (CVE-2026-33983) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Technical Analysis

FreeRDP contains two security flaws: a heap buffer overflow (CVE-2026-33984) that enables arbitrary code execution when processing crafted pixel data, and a denial of service vulnerability (CVE-2026-33983) triggered by specially crafted Remote Desktop Protocol messages. These vulnerabilities impact the xfreerdp client used to connect to RDP servers. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4 and associated distributions are affected. Red Hat has issued an important security advisory (RHSA-2026:10709) with updated freerdp packages to remediate these issues.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-33984 could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the client system, potentially leading to full system compromise. CVE-2026-33983 could cause denial of service, disrupting the availability of the affected client. Both vulnerabilities pose significant risks to systems using vulnerable versions of FreeRDP, especially in environments relying on remote desktop connections.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated freerdp packages (version 2.11.2-1.el9_4.6) for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4 and related variants that address these vulnerabilities. Users should apply these official security updates promptly following Red Hat's guidance at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. No additional vendor-recommended mitigations are indicated beyond applying the provided patches.
