Technical Analysis

This advisory covers three security fixes in the OpenJDK 21 runtime environment as distributed by Red Hat for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and related products. The fixes address vulnerabilities identified as CVE-2025-30698 (Buffered Image handling), CVE-2025-30691 (compiler transformations), and CVE-2025-21587 (TLS connection support). The vulnerabilities relate to issues categorized under CWE-208 (Information Exposure), CWE-120 (Classic Buffer Overflow), and CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow). The update improves security by enhancing image processing, compiler behavior, and TLS connections. The advisory does not provide CVSS scores but rates the impact as moderate. The update is available and recommended for affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and CodeReady Linux Builder 10 packages.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities could potentially allow attackers to exploit weaknesses in image handling, compiler transformations, or TLS connections within the OpenJDK 21 runtime environment. The moderate severity rating indicates a meaningful but not critical risk. No known exploits in the wild have been reported. The issues could lead to information exposure or memory corruption if exploited.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released an official security update for java-21-openjdk on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and related products. Users should apply the update as described in the Red Hat advisory (RHSA-2025:7508) to remediate these vulnerabilities. Detailed update instructions are available at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official patch.
