Technical Analysis

This advisory covers multiple security fixes in Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform releases 4.12.54 and 4.14.19. The key vulnerabilities include CVE-2024-1394, which involves memory leaks in the golang-fips/openssl code during RSA payload encryption and decryption; CVE-2024-24786, an infinite loop in golang-protobuf's protojson.Unmarshal when processing certain invalid JSON inputs; and CVE-2024-28180, improper handling of highly compressed data in jose-go. These vulnerabilities have been rated with an Important security impact by Red Hat Product Security and addressed in updated RPM packages and container images. Detailed upgrade instructions are provided by Red Hat to fully apply these asynchronous errata updates.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities could lead to resource exhaustion due to memory leaks and infinite loops, potentially affecting the stability and reliability of the OpenShift Container Platform. Improper handling of highly compressed data could also lead to unexpected behavior or denial of service conditions. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at this time. The security impact is rated as Important by Red Hat, indicating a high severity but not critical.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated packages and container images that fix these vulnerabilities. Users of OpenShift Container Platform versions 4.12.0 through 4.12.54 and 4.14.0 through 4.14.19 should upgrade to the respective fixed versions (4.12.54 and 4.14.19) as soon as they are available in their release channels. Upgrade instructions are available in the official Red Hat OpenShift documentation. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
