Description

virtualenv versions prior to 20.26.6 contain a command injection vulnerability in the activation scripts for virtual environments. This occurs because magic template strings are not properly quoted during replacement, allowing potential execution of arbitrary commands. This vulnerability is distinct from CVE-2024-9287. A patch is available to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-53899 affects virtualenv before version 20.26.6, where improper quoting of magic template strings in virtual environment activation scripts allows command injection. This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.4, indicating high severity with impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The flaw arises from unsafe string replacement in activation scripts, enabling an attacker to execute arbitrary commands when the environment is activated. The vulnerability is not related to CVE-2024-9287. Red Hat has issued an advisory and provided patches for affected packages.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker with local access to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the user activating the virtual environment. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system's user context, affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system.

Mitigation Recommendations

An official patch is available and should be applied to upgrade virtualenv to version 20.26.6 or later. Red Hat has released updated packages addressing this issue. Users should follow vendor guidance to update affected packages promptly. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official fix.
