virtualenv versions prior to 20.36.1 contain TOCTOU vulnerabilities in directory creation that allow local attackers to perform symlink-based attacks. This race condition affects app_data and lock file operations by redirecting them to attacker-controlled locations. The issue is patched in version 20.36.1. 0 A TOCTOU race condition in the filelock library used by virtualenv and other Python tools allows local attackers to exploit a symlink attack during lock file creation. This vulnerability enables truncation or corruption of arbitrary user files by exploiting the time gap between checking for a lock file's existence and opening it with truncation flags. It affects Unix, Linux, macOS, and Windows systems where filelock is used. The issue is fixed in filelock version 3.20.1 by preventing symlink following during lock acquisition. 0 virtualenv versions prior to 20.26.6 contain a command injection vulnerability in the activation scripts for virtual environments. This occurs because magic template strings are not properly quoted during replacement, allowing potential execution of arbitrary commands. This vulnerability is distinct from CVE-2024-9287. A patch is available to address this issue. Join the discussion | GCVE Database | 08/13/2026, 17:46:53 UTC Added: 08/16/2026, 15:28:11 UTC |
