AI-suggested
Red Hat has released updated libtirpc packages as part of the Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs update. Users should apply these updates to remediate the vulnerability. Additionally, to mitigate risk, avoid configuring applications that use pmap_getmaps() to query untrusted or attacker-controlled portmapper services. If such queries are necessary, restrict network access to trusted hosts using firewall rules and consider isolating client applications to limit potential resource exhaustion impact.
Description
A vulnerability in libtirpc's pmap_getmaps() function can be exploited by a remote attacker sending crafted PMAPPROC_DUMP replies, causing unbounded memory and CPU consumption in the client process. This leads to a Denial of Service (DoS) due to resource exhaustion. The flaw affects client applications querying attacker-controlled or spoofed portmapper services. Exploitation requires active use of the vulnerable portmapper path, limiting broad applicability. Mitigation involves avoiding queries to untrusted portmapper services or restricting access to trusted hosts.
