What to do

AI-suggested

Red Hat recommends restricting network access to the Prometheus remote read endpoint (/api/v1/read) by configuring firewall rules or network policies to allow connections only from trusted internal networks or authorized clients. This reduces exposure to unauthenticated remote attackers. A service restart or reload may be required for the mitigation to take effect.

Description

A denial of service vulnerability exists in Prometheus's remote read endpoint (/api/v1/read) due to improper validation of snappy-compressed request lengths. An unauthenticated attacker can send a specially crafted small payload that triggers excessive memory allocation, causing the Prometheus process to crash and resulting in service unavailability. This affects Red Hat products deploying Prometheus for monitoring. Mitigation involves restricting network access to the vulnerable endpoint via firewall or network policies.
